Beyond Thinking: Taking Action for Global Change

Updated: Mar 26

For years, I have seen children begging on the streets, witnessed their struggles on television in countries affected by natural and man-made disasters, and observed the disruption of their lives. Teachers in school would scold us for wasting food or playing with water, reminding us that there are children around the world who do not have enough to eat or drink. We were often told how privileged we were to have an unlimited supply of these essentials, while so many children in our own country were begging for them.

But what about the countless children in entire regions where even begging is not an option? Where access to clean water and food is unimaginable?

It may seem like the numbers have improved, but they are still far from being good enough. Try counting 115 grains of rice—each grain representing a person without access to clean water. Now imagine 115 million people still not receiving clean drinking water. That is the scale of the crisis we are facing. In fact, 115 million is approximately 1,000,000 times 115. This staggering number highlights the urgent need for action. Real change cannot come from just one person. It takes a collective effort, a global community working together. With your help, we can give millions of children access to the essentials they need: clean water, nutritious food, and education—the very things that can empower them to break the cycle of poverty and build a better future.

Since 2015, over 687 million people have gained access to safely managed water services, including clean drinking water. By 2022, 5.82 billion people were using these services, and another 1.5 billion had access to basic water services. However, despite these improvements, 2.2 billion people still lack access to safely managed water services, including over 771 million who do not have access to clean drinking water at all. Of these, 115 million still collect drinking water directly from rivers, lakes, and other surface water sources.

The progress we’ve made is remarkable, and it has been possible because of the compassion of people like you—people who care about the well-being of future generations. Yet, millions of children are still being left behind, and it will take all of us, working together, to reach them.

The time for change is now. We must act, we must support, and we must provide the resources necessary to give these children a fighting chance.

It’s time to wake up. We’ve stayed passive for too long. Let’s act today—for the millions of children who are waiting for a better tomorrow.

Help me fundraise for those in need in support of UNICEF, which works tirelessly to provide safe drinking water for everyone, not just children. Your contribution can make a real difference in ensuring access to clean water, nutritious food, and education for those who need it most. Together, we can empower individuals and communities to build a better future.
